Late Summer Cycling Route from Rzeszów, Subcarpathia
Where summer ends and autumn begins
There’s this fleeting moment each year when summer hangs on, but you can already feel it slipping away. The sun is still warm, though it sits lower in the sky. Evenings close in earlier, shadows stretch longer, and the air feels softer – touched by that familiar hint of change.
That’s when we rolled out for this loop in Subcarpathia, starting from Rzeszów – the capital of the region, our hometown, and the current base of nologo that seems built for late-season rides. Roads that catch the last light. Fields already cut, smelling faintly of grain. Villages winding down into harvest evenings. It’s the kind of ride that reminds you cycling isn’t only about watts and training plans. It’s about seasons, rhythms, and noticing the subtle shifts that mark time on two wheels.
The route
The ride began late in the afternoon with a steady climb out of the city, where the skyline slips behind you and countryside takes over. From there, it’s rolling hills all the way: steady gradients, quiet turns, and open horizons. Forests flow into fields, then back to forest again – all stitched together by narrow, car-free roads that curve like handwriting across the land.
Closer to sunset, the story changes. A tractor rumbles across the road just ahead of us, its trailer piled high. Harvest time. The smell of straw and dust lingers in the air, while the fields glow gold under the sinking sun. Wind turbines turn slowly on the ridgelines, underlining the region’s natural character and its quiet commitment to ecology. These aren’t just cycling roads; they’re working roads, connecting people and seasons. That’s what makes Subcarpathia so special: you’re not pedaling through a postcard backdrop – you’re riding inside a landscape that’s still alive.
Why this ride matters
Subcarpathia isn’t about monumental climbs or tick-the-box bucket list routes. It’s about texture. The glow of the light, the sound of tyres on worn tarmac, the faint scent of harvest on the breeze. Riding here at summer’s end feels less like chasing numbers, more like closing a chapter. A pause to look back on the months behind, and to quietly prepare for the reset ahead.
Looking forward
Because after summer comes autumn. And if you ride, you know what that means: crisp mornings, skies that change by the hour, and the most photogenic season of them all. Trees lit up like fire, roads framed in colour, every corner a new picture. It’s not really an ending at all – it’s the beginning of the best season for riding (and for photos).
